Muriel Carty-Lash Named 2011 Water Czar.  It will be a challenging year but we are poised to do great things to reform old Bad Management Practices.  Governor Rick Scott has hit the deck running and we are with him.
Governor Rick Scott's new appointment of highly regarded Herschel Vinyard Jr. as DEP Secretary is seen as key to creating jobs through economic development stewardship of Florida's Environmental Treasures.

Today, Hundreds of millions of private dollars are being invested in systems to grow algae in Bio Energy Centers rather than in our Florida Springs.

Welcome to the View from Space Perspective on Florida's Water Contamination Cleanup Connection

Team Conservation, NASA and Space Florida take a broad view from space on Florida Clean Water Concerns.  Using the unique "Top Down" approach, Team Conservation. Com Editor Don Browning, introduces universal answers in order to find specific local solutions.   Art is an important way to focus attention on local problems.  Fundamental Answers are the solution path to many local problems.  Cleaning up myths about contaminated water help Floridians find local solutions.  Florida Environmental Protection officials have long supported recharging the huge Floridan Aquifer.  State of Florida officials are looking at unwanted contaminated sewer and storm water as a way to end old bad management practice of discarding unwanted pollution into the vast Drinking Water Aquifer that all of Florida depends on for potable water.  Keeping EPA out of Florida water issues is gaining strength in the Legislature.  Senator Alan Hays is leading the Team Conservation Charge.  Senator Hays is the the 2011 recipient of the Team Conservation Leadership Award.

Old Drainage Wells and leave a legacy of Pollution that may cost billions to correct.
Urban draining practices of surface waters into the aquifer, started decades ago are causing residents of some communities to grapple with ground water contamination from sewers and street cleaning of years past.  State cabinet officials are estimating the clean up to be in the billions.  Ag Commissioner Charles Bronson is publicly questioning whether the State of Florida can afford to even set standards for clean water as required by federal EPA officials.  Bronson is reportedly calling the needed clean up "a financial disaster".  Starting with an Environmental Disaster and adding a financial disaster is a course that may just bring out the full story of how regulatory agencies sometimes fall asleep at the switch.  FDEP is being asked to address concerns about hundreds of wells that seem to be the "smoking gun" of Florida's Springs Protection Algae Pollution concerns.  Legislators in both houses of Florida's Government are expressing concerns about the one-sided official story told by the utility regulatory officials responsible for Water Quality Protection.  Keeping EPA out of Florida Nitrate Issues is the key to protecting the environment while creating an economic recovery.

Florida Water Czar recognizes Guy Laliberte, and his One Drop Foundation, as a National Hero of clean water.

 News Just In:

Florida's Department of Environmental Protection creates an illusion of Spring Protection charges EPA officials.  Changes are on the horizon.  Hundreds of drains to the aquifer were not disclosed in recent DEP Springs Protection Programs.

Florida's Department of Environmental Protection is called on the carpet for bad management practices.  Years of draining pollutants into the drinking water aquifer is now called into question.  AG Secretary Charles H. Bronson  feels it will take Billions to repair the damage, asks that EPA hold up on requiring standards for Utility Drainage to Floridan Aquifer.

Millions spent recently for Springs Protection may have been a ploy to drain surface waters without appearing to be doing so.  Excess nitrates give away the untidy secret.  Environmentalist call for shake up.  Billions of Tax Payer Dollars may be at risk.  The  state's Potable Water supply may be contaminated by years of draining sewer waste, storm sewer runoff, river and lake water into the aquifer.  Some experts feel it is beneficial to recharge the aquifer with contaminated water.   It appears that only city and county utilities were allowed to dump into the aquifer.

Citizens reportedly are expressing concerns that water bills will rise if pollutants are not filtered out before Sewer Effluent is pumped into the Drinking Water Aquifer.  It costs a lot to clean Aquifer Water once pollutants are introduced.  Short term savings by utilities will end up costing customers a great deal in the long term, say utility operators off the record.  One Marion County official termed the Alachua dumping a "Time Bomb" that will arrive at the Ocala drinking water wells.

Sending community organizers out across Florida to promote new ordinances at the county level while refusing to even set standards for utilities who dump the vast majority of Algae causing nitrate contamination into the ground water.

A judge has now ruled in the publics favor and FDEP will have to at least set standards for nitrate dumping by utilities.

New inferred images of ground water in Florida may be able to help with water conservation.  Stay tuned for more on new nitrate standards.

Often the public is blamed for old bad utility systems that pollute our Water Supplies.

If you don't know about Drainage Wells and Sewer Effluent dumping systems don't worry, it is not your fault.  You have very likely been reading the news paper.

Many of the worst pollution sites are decades old.  No one is to blame.  Cover-ups don't solve the problem.  Harvesting technology is now available to take nutrient rich sewer and storm water to irrigation sites where it does a lot of good.

Harvested Reuse Water helps in two ways.

1. Gallon for gallon, less water needs to be withdrawn from our Floridan Aquifer.

2. Less contaminates are routed into the aquifer by direct pipes.

We all win.  See images from Space that show our Aquifers.

Information is power.

Water is equal to air as a fundamental requirement of life.

One mans pollution is another mans Solution. It is often a mater of degree and location.

Algae is growing as the result of BAD Management Practices, known as BMP's.  In Central Florida for example old bad practices for building a storm Sewer was to dig a hole to the Aquifer and drain away pollutants.

Today we know that Storm Sewers must be filtered for heavy metals, and especially nutrients before sending the contaminated runoff to the Ground Water.  Drinking water must be protected.

The City of Ocala has just 28 of these Point Pollution Drains.  For years the drains were a cheap way to dispose of pollutants, and in recent decades the high nutrient load has produced algae in the Local Silver Springs.

The Algae has been a boon for state agencies and local firms hired to study the Algae Growth.

Team Conservation is now hoping to cut the profitablity of the Algae in order to stop the official protection of the pollution sites.

Locally, a Sewer Treatment Plant dumps over 6 million tons of nitrogen rich sewer effluent into the drinking water.  Because 10 parts per million of nitrogen is within the drinking water federal and state limits, the 10 parts per million is sent into the aquifer.

Drinking water standard water seems harmless enough until you realize we have an algae problem at 1 part per million.

Of course FDEP is protecting the pollution in order to keep the funding stream active.  For over 10 years hundreds of experts have grown wealthy protecting the pollution sites in order to keep the funding coming from the taxpayers.

Now we know better.  Legislators are becoming aware of the reason the springs never seem to get better.
